U-Joint Inspection and Replacement
The universal joint, more commonly referred to as a u-joint, is a flexible coupling device that serves an important, if unassuming role in the safe and comfortable operation of your vehicle. One of the main jobs of a u-joint is transmitting rotational force between the differentials, the driveshaft, and the transmission of your vehicle. These work together to turn the wheels responsible for propelling the vehicle, known as “drive wheels”. When you need u-joint replacement & repair in Oak Ridge, TN or the surrounding area, call People’s Choice Auto Repair at (865) 272-3379.
The u-joint is a critical part of your vehicle, and as a linking component it should be flexible enough to allow for a wide range of motion and different angles. Changes in the alignment between the driveshaft and differentials creates different angles that allow for smooth, continuous operation of a motor vehicle. U-joints are made of 4 legs, called trunnions, that extend outward from the center body, or cross. The trunnions are covered with bearing caps and are found within the yoke, which is made to spin and pivot as the driveshaft rotates. Many u-joints found equipped out of the factory on vehicles are sealed, while some can be found as aftermarket modifications which can be greased, and should be regularly lubricated to ensure continued function.
U-joint Replacement & Repair
Squeaking, grinding, and clicking noises while driving are signs that your u-joints may have started to fail and require replacement services. If you fail to replace your u-joints in time, they may cause further damage to other components in your vehicle which require more expensive repairs. Rattling noises or vibrations are indicators that your u-joint may be faulty. If your CV assembly is not properly lubricated, you may hear grinding noises which indicate metal-on-metal contact. This excess friction will wear out u-joints quickly. U-joints can also bend under stress from the engine, and may rust over time which adds surface resistance and makes them less able to operate properly.
